Gameful Technology – Connecting Physical and Virtual Worlds

Biography: Johanna Virkki (D.Sc., M.Sc., M.A.) works as an Associate Professor (Gameful Technology) in Tampere University, Finland. She has 15+ years of experience in engineering, in fields of reliability engineering, materials and manufacturing methods of electronics, wireless systems, and intelligent clothing. She is also a licensed speech and language therapist and works part-time with adult and pediatric clients. Her work during the recent years has especially focused on serious games and enabling technology for people with speech and language disorders, motor impairments, and cognitive challenges.

AI-enabled affect analysis and applications

Biography: Dr Dimitrios Kollias, FHEA, is currently a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in AI with the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London. He is a member of Multimedia and Vision (MMV) research group and of the Queen Mary Computer Vision Group; an associate member of the Centre for Advanced Robotics (ARQ); an academic fellow of the Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI). He has obtained the Ph.D. from Imperial College London (ICL), where he was a member of the iBUG group and recipient of the prestigious Teaching Fellowship of ICL. He has been a Senior Lecturer in AI with the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, University of Greenwich. Additionally, he has worked as Research Scientist at Deep Render Ltd on deep learning based image/video compression; he has been Consultant at FaceSoft Ltd on deep learning based affect recognition and generation; he has has been Consultant at Cogitat Ltd on decoding people’s music-listening brain states; he has collaborated with Realeyes Company on machine learning based affect and attention methodologies. His research covers AI, machine and deep learning, computer vision, affect analysis and generation, medical imaging and healthcare. He has published his research in top journals and conferences, such as IJCV, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, IEEE TAC, Neurocomputing, BMVC, IJCNN and ECAI. He is the inventor of the 'Facial Behaviour Analysis' (2021) patent. He has been the Chair of the ABAW series of Competitions and Workshops in IEEE CVPR 2023 and 2022, ECCV 2022, ICCV 2021 and IEEE FG 2020, as well as the Chair of the MIA-COV19D series of Competitions and Workshops in IEEE ICASSP 2023, ECCV 2022 and ICCV 2021; he is organizer of REACT Workshop in ACM-MM 2023. He has h-index 29, with over 3000 citations.
